Sisters’ Mission in Rumichaca-Urubamba

JUN 2, 2026

From May 19 to 23, we carried out a mission in the rural communities of Canay, Pacha Machayoc, and Cocha Cochayoq, located in the Challabamba district of Paucartambo province (Cusco). After a journey of approximately six hours, we arrived at our destination and began visiting families. However, since it was harvest time, most of the residents were working in their fields. During this season, they harvest potatoes, setting aside a portion for seed and another for making moraya and chuño—foods that help them get through times of scarcity.

As often happens during our missions, the children were the first to approach us. Gradually, other residents also arrived as they finished their agricultural work. These encounters allowed us to share time with the families, gain firsthand insight into their circumstances, and accompany them in their life of faith.

One of the greatest gifts we received during the week was the celebration of Holy Mass in the community of Canay. Thanks be to God, the parish priest was able to join us—a highly significant event for these communities where the Eucharist is usually celebrated only once or twice a year due to the vast size of the parish territory and the shortage of priests.

People from neighboring communities also attended the celebration, many of whom walked for several hours to take part. They took the opportunity of the priest's presence to commend their deceased loved ones to God, pray for their families' health, receive blessings, and pray for a good harvest. In addition, we shared catechesis on Pentecost and the Last Things, delving into the truths of our faith and the hope of eternal life. We also began preparation for the sacraments of Christian initiation. The children participated with enthusiasm and a sense of responsibility, joyfully attending the scheduled sessions. As a token of appreciation, several families gifted us various types of potatoes—a gesture we received with great affection and gratitude.

This mission was a deeply enriching experience for both the communities and us. Each day concluded with catechesis, the recitation of the Holy Rosary, songs of praise, and thanksgiving to God. Once again, we were able to witness the profound faith of these families and their great desire to draw ever closer to the Lord.
